Indigestion is a digestive problem that happens after taking a heavy meal. Indigestion, which is caused by excessive acid that accumulate in the stomach, can be treated with proper food habits and medical treatment.
In fact, Indigestion is referred to many digestive problems; however, this name is commonly used when you have a pain in stomach after heavy meal. One may experience severe or mild indigestion. Mild indigestion occurs after heavy meal with a mild pain. If you eat spicy, garlic, pickle and unripe foods, which take long time to digest, you are likely to suffer from mild indigestion. When food remains in stomach for a long time, acid that accumulates to digest them discharge out causing heartburn and belching. Then, we feel uncomfortable.
On the other hand, in chronic indigestion pain is severe; it may result from other reasons such as a peptic ulcer, a hiatus hernia or migraine. You may need medical attention if you have harsh ingestions.
Drink lot of water and eat fruits and vegetable to avoid indigestion. If you are suffering from indigestion, drink enough water and eat a lot of fruits and vegetable such as green peas, broccoli, parsley thumps and soybean, specially the food rich in fibre. At the same time eat slowly and chew well. When you chew your food well and eat slowly, it helps digestion. Moreover, you must avoid processed foods such as meat, which take a lot of time to digest, and avoid spicy meal. Changing your food habit is the first step to overcome indigestion.
Also change the way you take your meal. You should avid big meal, and, instead, eat several small meals per day. It helps to digest the meal you take easily. In addition, you have to avoid late night meal, which can increase indigestion. Also, you should relax about 30 minutes after meal to increase the process of digestion.
Drink herbal tea to reduce indigestion. Most of the people drink at least one cup of tea per day. What you can do if you have problem of indigestion is that you can change your normal tea to an herbal tea, which reduce indigestion. Chamomile tea is popular among many people who are suffering from indigestion.
Treat indigestion with baking soda. If you have mild indigestion, take a glass of water and mix it with a half tablespoon of baking soda. Then sip it slowly. Baking soda reacts with acid in the stomach and neutralizes the effect of acid.
Use ginger and lemon to treat indigestion. When you add ginger or lemon to tea you drink, it reduces indigestion.
Buttermilk is a homemade remedy for indigestion. Get some curry leaves and coriander leaves and crushed them together. Then mix them with buttermilk and sip the mixture. You get a quick relief from indigestion.
Fruit juice reduces indigestion. Drink pineapple, lemon or ginger juice when you are suffering from indigestion. It reduces the impact of acid in stomach.
Doctors prescribe antacids and prokinetics to cure indigestion. Antacids reduce and neutralize acid in stomach while improving digestion. You must take it after meal. Some doctors also recommend prokinetics; however, it may have side effects such as fatigue, sleepiness, depression, and involuntary muscle spasm.
